Lack of space, frugality and a deep desire to tap into my creative side has led me to a love of DIY and repurposing. When styling dessert tables and parties it’s a good idea to have some standard pieces in your stash. Cake stands, trays, tiered servers and of course lots of linens. However, unless you have an enormous storage area there will come a time when you have to put a twist on something you already have. It’s also the economical thing to do.
These days I find myself channeling my inner Fred Sanford and using items that I would typically throw away. Case in point, coffee cans. A couple of weeks ago I decided to save a couple of cans, just in case. My family will tell you that there are quite a few “just in case” items in my work area. The cans that I have are plastic or heavy duty paper covered. After washing the cans the decision was what to cover them with. Wrapping paper, scrapbook paper, paint, tissue paper and modge podge are great inexpensive options that I’m sure I’ll use one day. This time around I chose fabric remnants and a napkin I was going to throw away. Throwing a napkin away because it’s old doesn’t even sound right for me. Luckily I came to my senses and now there isn’t an old napkin and coffee can safe from my clutches!
I measured the circumference and height of the can, adding an inch and a half to the height. The extra inch and a half gave me enough fabric to fold over the top of the can for a smoother appearance. After getting the correct measurements I made a pattern from kraft paper and then cut my covering from that. Due to the dark covering on the cans I first covered them with fabric interfacing. Just so happens I had some of that laying around also. Both the interfacing and fabrics were applied with hot glue. The next time I’ll try an adhesive fabric spray. This will eliminate the somewhat bumpy finish from the hot glue.
Once the cans were covered they were embellished. The pink one is the napkin and I enhanced it with white lace, two toned pink ribbon and two pewter buttons.
For the second can I used a beige fabric remnant with a white flowery design. It was dressed up with organza ribbon trimmed with a faux rhinestone buckle.
I made a quick centerpiece from flowers that I already had on hand for each. Total time for both cans was approximately 45 minutes. The stone covered tray and glittered votives are previous DIY projects also. Just think of how much money you could save making your own centerpieces for parties and events. For the DIY bride this would be a great project for the wedding party to help out with. You can use silk flowers, flowers from a florist, the grocery store or your own garden.
This last one I shared a couple of weeks ago, it was from my birthday tablescape. Again, simple to pull together and you could fill these bowls with flowers, LED lights, candles, ribbons, or even candy. By using graduated sizes of bowls I stack the smaller bowls in the larger one and save space. I’m really excited to add this to the options for my tables and can’t wait to show you more.
