These easy swaps to transform a casual tablescape to an elegant one, take no time at all.
With a few substitutions, you can keep your base design/style intact so that going back to it when your formal tablescape is no longer needed is easily done.
By far, layering is one of the simplest routes to an elegant table. Unlike rules of yesteryear, silk and brocade aren’t the standards in table refinement. The first step in upgrading my casual table was to add a thrifted full lace ivory overlay on top of the base cloth. Lace and the airiness of it is a repeated quality on the table.
For the centerpiece, I kept the two-toned pink flowers and removed the white paper inserts in the vases. They are replaced with gold and white inserts that feel like cloth with a lace-like texture.
To enhance the formal feel of the centerpiece I removed the small clear candlesticks and in their place are tall rose-gold mercury glass taper holders with an ivory candle. The candlesticks also sport pink and crystal look bling in the front and back. The bling is decorative accents designed for table lamps that I found at Pier 1 several years back. They are magnetized for ease of application.
Rounding out the centerpiece are small mercury glass votive holders with a rhinestone ornament on the front.
I kept the hot pink placemats and added a gold acrylic charger. More dishes mean more courses which bring to mind a more formal affair, so I deepened the stack by adding a cream-colored dessert plate with a floral motif around the outside and a gold rim. The hot pink napkin is wrapped around the dinner plate.
Out with the silver flatware and in with gold. I also added a gold dessert fork on top of the dessert dish.
Each set also has an additional goblet. The new ones are rimmed in gold; two have a more tulip shape and the others traditional.
My ideas for using easy swaps to transform a casual tablescape to an elegant one used mostly items I had on hand and most of them thrifted. A little time shopping your home and buying pieces that are interchangeable is the key to building a tablescape stash that will see you through everyday meals and elegant ones.
