Comfort food has no season, at least that’s the way I see it. Naturally there are foods that are seasonal and we tend to eat them when they’re most abundant. When speaking of comfort food however, the keyword is comfort. What foods make you comfortable, make you feel good, make you feel like you’ve slipped into your slightly tattered robe and comfy slippers. There are times when we need a hug due to a rough day, bad news, rotten mood or just because. A simple bite or sip from comfort food and all is well with the world; if only for a minute.
Then there are go-to foods/recipes. These are dishes that you can make with one hand tied behind your back and your eyes closed. You nail this one every time, hands down. Maybe you have unexpected company coming and you’re short on time. This isn’t the time to go all Martha on your guests; you have to stick to the tried and true. Or could it be that your kitchen adventures of late have been a string of hot messes and you need to get your mojo back.
Or, you’ve been on restriction and you couldn’t stand for long periods without being in pain and your doctor told you to take it easy. By now you see where I’m going with this. I felt the need to bake something from scratch that was easy and familiar. Enter Sweet Potato Pound Cake, it never fails me. One bite and all thoughts of a torn tendon and four weeks of physical therapy temporarily evaporate.
In a recent Chef Dennis post he mentioned that we food bloggers can’t make the same things all the time. Most of the time I really do try and not repeat myself, this time, not so much. I could eat this cake everyday and twice on Sunday and I know there are many more in my future. I promise not to post each of them, but for now just humor me. Please and thank you!
